Te Matau a Maui Voyaging Trust: Voyagers wanted!

Tena koutou to all of my email contacts

We are looking for new crew members on our waka and would like to invite anyone who is interested to apply for a Weekend long wananga/workshop held on the 28 Feb to the 2 Mar, at Matahiwi marae outside of Hastings and on Te Matau a Maui voyaging canoe in Napier. This is a full weekend intensive wānanga where new crew will be selected into different groups with experienced crew mentors and support crew and expected to participate fully in all of the physical and mental activities. The activities include water safety sessions, sailing, tikanga waka, basics on navigation, swimming, running, cross fit (maybe), mental challenges, presentations, rope work, early morning fitness rituals and trust exercises all in one action packed weekend.

AGE: we are classifying rangatahi as 17-30 however we are aware that there are 14year olds, or 40year olds for that matter, who would be perfect for this. We are also asking for a bit of a character reference in the registration form which will help if you don’t fit inside the ‘rangatahi’ box, we are looking for people who will be able to help keep our waka afloat.

LOCATION: The kaitiaki of the waka are the people of Kahungunu Whānui Rohe so priority will be given to whānau from and living within the rohe. Also most if not all wānanga are held in Napier/Hastings so priority is given to whānau who can contribute to a waka who is most of the time in Napier.

SUPPORT WHĀNAU MEMBER: We are offering for our under 18 year olds the opportunity to bring a whānau member to tautoko their rangatahi, the whānau member is expected to either get fully involved with the activities, or help with the ‘behind the scenes’ mahi if they prefer.

COST: There may be a cost of about $20-$40 to attend.
