Canoes on the move: Hikianalia heads back home as Hokulea explores north of Australia
Both voyaging canoes Hikianalia and Hokule’a are on the move Sunday night.
Hokule’a is off the coast of Northern Australia, and Hikianalia on her way back home to O’ahu. Hikianalia set sail Monday morning for the northwestern island of Nihoa.
On board are several members of the Nature Conservancy and community groups who were monitoring ocean life to create a baseline as they strategize bringing our coastal waters back to health.
Hikianalia was sailing under first-time captain Kaleo Wong and guided by apprentice navigator Jason Patterson.
They’re now halfway between Nihoa and Kaua’i, travelling east into the easterly trades, which makes for a slow going.
Meanwhile, Hokule’a is guided by apprentice navigator Haunani Kane.
They left Thursday Island a couple days ago and are about 150 miles away from her next stop in Darwin, then Hokule’a’s next stop will be Bali.
